Letter from Glasgow: Looking to Sea
We walked to the water’s edge where a line of dead seagulls, some of them picked to the bone, were washed up on the tide. It was said that the North Sea was five degrees warmer than usual. Last week a humpback whale was seen in the Clyde. The sky was dense as before a storm. The browny light of it reflected in the cloudy brown of the sea, or was it the other way round?

Lucia, la soeur (2)
Lucia est menue, on peut la croire fragile. Voilà six mois qu’elle jette toutes ses forces dans le Comité des familles du San Juan et elle tient bon. Le Comité a manqué se fissurer plusieurs fois, il a tenu bon. Avant la catastrophe, les familles ne s’étaient jamais rencontrées, elles forment maintenant une communauté. Il y a de la solidarité et même de la fraternité dans le malheur commun. On partage des interrogations et des colères, on s‘entraide. Sans Lucia, les naufragés auraient sombré une deuxième fois, ils auraient pourri dans la cale des faits-divers périmés. Lucia ne se considère pas comme un être d’exception. Ce combat pour la vérité et la justice, elle le doit à son frère. L’image d’Adrian enfermé dans l’acier l’obsède. Il voit la mort venir. Elle voudrait arrêter le film. C’est maintenant qu’il faut lutter pour arracher la vérité. Un jour, les enfants d’Adrian demanderont ce où est leur père leur père, où gît l’épave, pourquoi les recherches ont été si vite abandonnées. Ils auront le droit. Parfois l’image du noyé s’obscurcit, l’image des neveux devenus grands s’éclaire.

Mahsa Amini died on September 16th, 2022, after being tortured and beaten to death by Iran’s morality police for violating hijab regulations at the age of 22. Her death sparked ongoing protests and repression of activists in the country. Demonstrators continue to use the Kurdish feminist slogan “Woman, life, freedom” to highlight the situation of women in the country, which continues to imprison female journalists and to subject them to show trials behind closed doors for their reporting on women’s rights. Following Amini’s death, women around the world cut their hair in a gesture of solidarity with the victim. I cut and kept my hair as well, using it as a medium with which to alter a found Persian rug.
